Whom Shall I Fear (Lyrics) – Chris Tomlin

Whenever Hearing “You are my sword and shield, Though troubles linger still, Whom shall I fear”, I’m inspired to depend on and look to God, then afraid of nothing, just like the name of the song, “Whom shall I fear.” God’s words are our sword and shield. Having God’s words as our life, we can discern good from evil and not fall for Satan’s tricks. In this way, we will have faith in God and stand testimony for Him, when tempted and attacked by Satan.

In this world, we face temptations and attacks both great and small from Satan every day. Sometimes, we have a tough time at work, marriage, family and study. And sometimes, we get ridiculed and arrested for our belief. All of these make us feel uneasy, and much pressure. If we lack faith in God, we’ll easily complain against Him, even will leave Him. Hence, it is necessary for us to know God’s work and know He perfects us through people, events and objects that we meet. God’s words say, “In every step of work that God does within people, externally it appears to be interactions between people, as if born of human arrangements, or from human interference. But behind the scenes, every step of work, and everything that happens, is a wager made by Satan before God, and requires people to stand firm in their testimony to God. Take when Job was tried, for example: Behind the scenes, Satan was making a bet with God, and what happened to Job was the deeds of men, and the interference of men.” “You must be awake and waiting at every moment, and you must come before Me more. You must recognize the various plots and cunning schemes of Satan, know the spirit, know people and be able to discern all kinds of people, matters and things; you must eat and drink more of My words and, more importantly, you must be able to eat and drink them by yourselves. Equip yourselves with all the truth, come before Me so that I may open your spiritual eyes and allow you to see all the mysteries that lie within the spirit….” From God’s words we can see that the environment comes upon us out of His permission. Satan uses various plots to make us stray from God and complain against Him. But, God’s wisdom is based on Satan’s schemes: He uses these environments make us to come before God often, seek His will and rely on Him to get wise to Satan’s tricks. After knowing His will, we can’t be afraid of any difficulties.

God’s words show us the way of practice: “If you wish to be perfected by God, you must learn to experience all things and be enlightened in all that you face. Whenever you are faced with something, be it good or bad, you should benefit from it and it should not cause you to become passive. No matter what, you should be able to consider it by standing on the side of God, and not analyze or study it from the perspective of man (this is a deviation in your experience). If this is the manner of your experience, then your heart will be taken over by the burdens for your life; you will live constantly in the light of God’s countenance and will not easily deviate in your practice. Such kind of man has great prospects.” If we practice based on His words, accept things we run into from Him and seek lessons that we ought to enter into, then our life will blossom more quickly. In this way, we’re neither afraid of difficulties nor Satan’s temptation.

Thanks to author’s beautiful song, it reminds us that God always stands by us and protect us. When something unpleasant happens it is due to His good intentions are surely behind it. We can overcome everything when depending on and looking to God. Thanks for His guidance and leadership! May we read God’s word more and pursue to make progress in life.
